Children’s Rights Mural in the Dominican Republic

Carin Steen painted from May 1-7 I a mural at the front wall of the Club Deportivo 20-30 Elementary School in Puerto Plata, a city on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

This mural project was scheduled for November 2016, but unfortunately we had to postpone it last minute due to bad weather. This time there was more sunshine than we could wish for, so no more excuses! From May 1-7 I painted this mural at the front wall of the Club Deportivo 20-30 Elementary School in Puerto Plata, a city on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The mural was commissioned by the Dutch foundation Colour4Kids that has been working with this school for 5 years. Recently they added 3 classrooms to the school. This mural was the cherry on the cake to finish the project. Erik van Middendorp of Colour4Kids was a great help and helped me paint every day. On the 5th day we were ready for the kids: the upper half was already painted and the bottom half prepared in such a way the kids could easily colour it in. Within an hour the mural was completely transformed! The school is located in a very lively neighbourhood (Los Cocos) along a busy street. An excellent location for a community mural! We got tons of positive feedback, from the kids as well as the people in the ‘hood. And after a week of working in the soaring heat in a very noisy street, we were finished and ready to move on to the next!
